Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra - Evanescence (1992)

Abstract, mysterious, and all-in-all breathtaking big band jazz from a truly brilliant composer and bandleader. My first exposure to Maria Schneider was her collaboration with David motherfucking Bowie, the anxious, simmering first version of "Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)", and everything I've heard from her since has more than delivered on that song's promise.

Track listing:
1. Wyrgly
2. Evanescence
3. Gumba Blue
4. Some Circles
5. Green Piece
6. Gush
7. My Lament
8. Dance You Monster to My Soft Song
9. Last Season

Why too dark to speak the words?

  1. I'm really enjoying this album a bunch; thanks for posting it. My jazz collection doesn't have enough women in it. I know your an ECM fan so I'd highly recommend Metre Henriette's self titled record, a different bird than this post but souls fit nicely on Opium Hum. Cheers!

  3. This is great. Its one of my favorite jazz records ever. You should also check out the live album; "SWR Big band live 2018" and if you can, upload it here as well, since it's very difficult to listen to it online.
