Previously on OPIUM HUM:
Mikami Kan - ひらく夢などあるじゃなし 三上寛怨歌集 (1972)
Sparse, goosebump-inspiring Japanese folk rock. Kan's first solo album, 三上寛の世界 (which I believe translates to "The World of Mikami Kan") consists almost entirely of Kan's remarkable, expressive singing accompanied by a lone, plaintive acoustic guitar. It's a true testament to the power of Kan's voice that someone who does not understand Japanese can find his music so emotionally compelling.
Track listing:

2. ものな子守歌
3. カラス

ReplyDeleteThanks for the recommendation! Any particular album I should start with?
Delete"Ore no uchi de nari yamanai uta - Nakahara Chūya sakuhin-shū" (1978) has lush prog arrangements by J.A. Seazer, but his 80s albums are better ("Sakura no Kuni no Chiru Naka wo", and "Umi Shizuka, Koi Wa Yami" in particular).
DeleteI can't thank your blog enough for all the new music I've discovered~
ReplyDeleteActually he's the creator of "japanese blues", the "Mikami Mojo"...
ReplyDeleteIf you're into Captain Beefheart, you'll love more recent Mikami, that is a cross between the captain, acoustic delta blues & free jazz....
Check out Bang!, his masterpiece!!!!

Could you please fix the zip share? I was so happy to find Mikami, but the link is not working. Do you know and could recommend any similar Japanese musicians?
