Rafael Toral - Sound Mind Sound Body (1994)

Great news: post-vacation depression is sinking in, so I'm back on my sadboi shit. Here's ambient composer Rafael Toral's first album. Spacious, drifting drones and abstract, glistening minimalism, almost entirely sourced from electric guitar.

Track listing:
1. A E R 4
2. Loopability I
3. A E R 7 E
4. Soft Energy I

  2. Sadboi is an irresistible genre for sure! I have lately added Crystal Castles to this list of feeling bad music, in particular II and III. What's your take on that early stuff....I know the back story of Alice Glass, and maybe that colors it somewhat fo me. In any case, it's really sucked me in. Old school electronical dance with Joy Division's bad feelings? Blondie and Kraftwerk on the brink of suicide?

    1. I have always liked everything I've heard from Crystal Castles but never quite did a deep dive on them or whatever. I probably should. People used to play them at the record store all the time and I was way into it. It's kind of a tough listen now, given what came to light about the abusive group dynamic. The new Alice Glass is pretty great.

  3. It is weird to let real life impose itself in music I like so much......don't know why it happens with her...you want real pain, watch some of those early live videos. She is so great, but it's more painful to watch than good ol' Ian Curtis. At least she survived!

  5. maybe it's drugs.........maybe both...She was a pretty great stand up singer it looks like. Try swimming around in II and III........both great lps in my estimate. I is good, but not as solid. I don't know anyone in my world that ever gave them a listen.....pity
