Magic Dirt - Friends in Danger (1996)

Australian grunge. Friends in Danger is Magic Dirt's first and, from what I've heard, still their best album. It's angsty and imperfect, but really, it couldn't be any other way, and for fans of 90s-style alt rock, it's a goddamn treasure. The album-opening title track alone makes it worth a spin. Love the thick, no high-end guitar tone, too - kinda like Siamese Dream but, obviously, not as layered.

Track listing:
1. Friends in Danger
2. Heavy Business
3. Pristine Christine
4. Bodysnatcher
5. Dylan's Lullaby
6. Sparrow
7. Shovel
8. Fear
9. Befriended Fallen Angel
10. I Was Cruel

At the start
I can do it
Everything

  4. Wow, it always amazes me what you have hidden on here! I have to agree they never ever did a better record than this one. After this they slowly but steadily became really derivitive, cliched 90's alt rock imo.

Personally myself, I was more into their first run of EP's and singles like 'Signs Of Satanic Youth' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7ihro09ico) and 'Life was Better' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSDqt0Ev0Lk). Those EP's are awesome.

My older Brother's band was good friends with these guys too and they toured together heaps in the early through mid 90's. He actually came super close to joining them for this album after things went south with his band and the Dirt's original guitarist quit really suddenly after they got signed to a major. Think he ended up hanging in the studio a bit but decided not to join cos he didn't feel right coming in and riding the last leg to the top when he hadn't been there for the whole journey or some such rubbish. He was kicking himself pretty hard when this came out and was a pretty bloody huge album in Australia ha ha ha. You gotta love the go-go 90's. Oh and hindsight, gotta love hindsight.
