Julie Ruin - Julie Ruin (1998)
Just watched and loved the Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill/Le Tigre) documentary, The Punk Rock Singer ; if you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend that you do. Among other revelations, I learned that shortly before Bikini Kill split, Hanna put out a solo album of lo-fi bedroom electro-punk under the pseudonym Julie Ruin. This probably is common knowledge. Having given it a few spins, I now agree with her hubby Ad-Rock's assertion that it's "a fucking masterpiece."

I refuse to take this seriously just like bands as Shonen Knife or Beat Happening.
ReplyDeleteI don't think she took it that seriously, either - there's a song about crocheting your anger away - I just enjoy it. It's fun and homemade.
Deletebeat happening and shonen are both great bands and this is great lo-fi. I'm sorry you have your head up your ass cause you must be missing out on a lot of good music.
Deletewho cares, she doesn´t need your validation, this was a great lofi electropunk record, regardless of your taste
DeleteI want this CD but there are very few copies available...and so f'in expensive!!!
ReplyDeleteI know! I guess it's super out of print, as Amazon's best price for it currently is $174. Ridonculous.
DeleteBlogger, you have my attention
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteI just watched Punk Rock Singer, fantastic. Somehow "The Julie Ruin" was off my radar even though I loved Bikini Kill.
The documentary on Le Tigre is equally good: Who Took the Bomp? It even shares some of the same footage so it makes a good companion to The Punk Rock Singer. It's like a bonus DVD, but might have more re-watch value since it includes the greatest Le Tigre anthems performed live: FYR, Hot Topic, and Keep on Living.
any chance we can get a re-upload for this record?
