that dog. - Totally Crushed Out! (1995)

Perfect 90s power pop. I saw That Dog open for Foo Fighters shortly after this album came out, and because I was young and dumb, barely paid attention to them. In fact, all I remember about their set is that no one in the audience really seemed to care about them either, and some asshole nailed the vocalist with a flying shoe. Oh well -- our fucking loss, obviously. Totally Crushed Out! sounds like a punk-er, harmonious hybrid of Last Splash, Exile in Guyville, and The Return of the Rentals (an album to which bassist/singer Rachel Haden contributed vocals.) Yes, I'm probably talking it up too much, but whatever, people who hold a candle for this style of alt rock and have slept on this band will cum in their pants when they hear them.

P.S. If you dig this, you should head over to GrrlBandGeek, where I originally picked it up, in the form of the blog's homemade 'deluxe edition' -- awesome!

  1. Ok, let's face it...this is just like the Justin Bieber, "more for the looks" than "going for talent".

    1. That's an unfair assessment. I love this music, and I have no idea what they look like.

Of course I am unfair :-)

    1. Hey look, they're hot. Also, that song is catchy and awesome. I put that song on a mix for my car earlier today, coincidentally, despite the fact that I can't actually see them while it's playing on my car stereo.

  3. C'mon :-) you don't have to answer for this, this is your blog and your taste in music. I hadn't heard from them before, so I searched for them on wiki and YT and found that rather awful (in my opnion that is) clip I mentioned above.

In my car I'd rather listen to something more quiet like ... eermm.. Snoop Doggy Dog? can I say that?

    1. Yep, you can say whatever you want. No one's opinion is likely to offend me (although commenting on some random blog to say "I don't like this" might not be the most productive activity.) I guess that saying that they're 'all looks and no talent' is somewhat offensive on another level, as is saying "let's face it, this is just like the Justin Bieber."

    2. And yes, Snoop Dogg is excellent driving music.

  4. Everyone is entitled to his own offensive music.I rather like Jax Thoth at the moment, mainly because of her Pyogenesis style riffing. And initially I thought it was a guy singing. :-)

  5. I know, how obnoxious is that. It's like, if you're not into a band, that's totally fine, but don't try to tell me that I don't genuinely like them. Especially if it's the same casually misogynistic nonsense ("people only like them cause they're hot") that gets leveled at pretty much every female musician.

  7. thanks for uploading that. For some reason I slept on this band for 20+ years like everyone else and I am sorry for it. This record is a lot deeper than it seems. And I have no idea what they look like.
