The Slow Crack finds Kilbey tapping into his warped pop sensibility and -- with an arsenal of guitars, synths, drum machine, and even some horns here and there -- creating perhaps the most upbeat record of his career. The hallucinatory lyrics and psychedelic feel remain, of course.

Russian raw black metal. Sibur is way uglier than its album art suggests. Though a lot of the riffs are technically melodic, the guitars are blown-out and often slightly out of tune, the vocals range from psychotic shrieks to punk-ish singing, and the whole thing has a rough, scatterbrained feel -- fitting for a demo, I suppose. The kind of stuff whose appeal would be utterly baffling to anyone who doesn't already like black metal.

Spacious, queasy drone, recorded live. Distant white noise, controlled high-end feedback, glacial drones, arhythmic knocks/clicks/wheezes, and a constant, distant sound that reminds me of a bunch of bats squeaking and flapping around at the heart of a cave, as recorded from outside of the cave. Yes, I'm high, why do you ask?

Fatso Jetson's first record is a ridiculously entertaining mash-up of cowpunk, surf rock, and a bit of of sludge-y grunge. Meat Puppets are maybe the best reference point, but I'm definitely hearing some Tad in there, too, and maybe... Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet? I dunno surf rock, really. Factor in a sense of spontaneity and sardonic humor -- no "wackiness," though -- and you've got a real lost 90s gem on your hands.

Masterful industrial black metal. The sound and delivery are cacophonous and harsh, but the songs are thoughtfully constructed, with some surprisingly elegant, melancholic guitar lines. Thanks to illegal downloading and a blatantly drug-referencing title (guess I've always been a sucker for that kinda thing) Cocaine was one of the first black metal records I ever heard, and along with In the Nightside Eclipse and Under a Funeral Moon, it set a pretty high bar.

German black metal. Surrealist Satanist is mostly traditional in approach, with some modern flourishes, phenomenal drumming, and nothing overtly psychedelic to speak of (not sure why they opted for the retro-stoner-doom font at the top there.) They do, however, generate a darkly enveloping atmosphere throughout, while maintaining -- until the end, anyway -- pedal-to-the-metal tempos.

Epic, raging Norwegian black metal with some viking elements -- a folky melody here, some clean vocals there, a touch of that "boing" instrument. While the vocals are pretty varied, there's a lot of this very high-pitched shriek that is either a bit silly or intensely lupine (or both) depending on your tastes. Jormundgand is Helheim's first and most straightforward record; they got increasingly viking-y and experimental from here.

Minsk - Out of a Center Which Is Neither Dead Nor Alive (2005)

I've been on a bit of a post-metal kick of late (sparked by an ongoing search for "store-friendly" metal) and Minsk has ended up on my shortlist for the best of the subgenre. Back when this came out, I dug it, but I kinda wrote them off as a Neurosis rip-off. My loss. Sure, it's clear that they love Through Silver in Blood and Times of Grace -- don't we all? -- but Minsk's approach is less sinister, more overtly psychedelic (and Eastern-influenced), and more singularly focused on creating massive, enveloping atmospheres and textures than on riffs.

Positively sublime, pop-oriented soul-jazz from Japanese jazz singer Kimiko Kasai. In case you need more convincing: Butterfly is, seemingly, a full-on collaboration between Kasai and Herbie Hancock, and features the great Bennie Maupin on sax. Run, don't walk.
