Disfiguring the Goddess - Sleeper (2012)

Solo US slam-death. Gutturals, synthetic-sounding guitars, tight, tech-y drumming, and arpeggiating synths, all wrapped up in a ridiculously heavy production job that points towards dude's other gig as a dubstep producer. Now that this style's not so fashionable, can we all just admit how rad it is? Call it industrial metal if it helps you -- just admit it, man.

Track listing:
1. Sleeper
2. Queen Kingdom
3. Daughter of Depths
4. Lady Epicenter
5. Vines of Aftermath
6. Mountain
7. Ocean Tomb

Camel - Moonmadness (1976)

Elite-tier prog. Lots of synths on this one, and an overall more laid-back feel than their previous records. Of course, there's still plenty of noodle-y instrumental sections, so don't you worry about that. Also: some of the best production I've ever heard. So clear and crisp, but warm and pillowy.

I only recently heard Moonmadness for the first time -- I made the mistake of trusting this dumb-dumb who told me that Mirage and The Snow Goose were their only good records, and it took me years to realize how wrong he was -- so it's probably too soon to tell, but it might be my favorite Camel. At the very least, it's as good as their first three.

Track listing:
1. Aristillus
2. Song Within a Song
3. Chord Change
4. Spirit of the Water
5. Another Night
6. Air Born
7. Lunar Sea

So far beyond the sky
Not knowing how or why
You realize this feeling is forever

Ascend - Ample Fire Within (2011)

Pitch-black drone-doom euphoria. Aside from a few samples, this is pure, earth-shaking guitar drone, in raw, (professional) demo-sounding form. Make sure that you're high on drugs, then turn this up as loud as possible and let it slowly enwrap you like a funeral shroud.

Track listing:
1. Holy Water
2. Peacock Angel
3. Power Nurse

It took the night to believe

Acrimony - In Unknown Direction (1992)

Polish thrash. Acrimony recorded just one album, and it just so happens to be one of the greatest thrash metal albums in existence. The perfect balance of mosh-friendly asskickery and (possibly) drug-influenced weirdness, and chops aplenty. Can't believe it hasn't gotten the deluxe reissue treatment.

Track listing:
1. Entering
2. Peace of Mind
3. It Stands to Reason
4. Level of Absolute
5. When Night Is Falling
6. What's That Light
7. Nothing of the Kind

Brats - 1980 Brats (1980)

Related:
King Diamond - The Eye (1990)
Mercyful Fate - Return of the Vampire (1992)

Brats were a short-lived band whose only LP is a killer fusion of punk, hard rock, and heavy metal. Despite the record's awesomeness, it likely would have faded into utter obscurity (as opposed to semi-obscurity) if, shortly after it came out, then-guitarist/vocalist Hank Shermann hadn't recruited a young King fucking Diamond to take over lead vocal duties, thereby planting the seeds for Mercyful fucking Fate.

Track listing:
1. Oy-905
2. Tame Me (Insomniac)
3. B-Brains
4. Punk Fashion
5. Complex (Don't Destroy Me)
6. Fuel
7. Heavy Rocker

Icos - Fragments of Sirens (2007)

Swedish sludge/post-metal coated in a thick layer of crust. Heavy, atmospheric dirges that evoke images of manmade apocalpyse.

3. On My Own
4. In Repose
5. Nightmare
6. Midnight Scenery

An obscure gem of smooth, lean 70s funk. Slap bass, sweet-as-honey vocal harmonies, a lil' bit of sexy sax, and plenty of sweet, sweet synth. Be easy, baby.

Track listing:
1. Days
2. Devil's Eye
3. Be Mine
4. You, You, You
5. Satisfy Your Lovin'

Austrian darkwave/neoclassical. Dramatic, fantastical classical pieces -- in the way that black metal intro tracks might be considered "classical pieces" -- performed on cheap-sounding keyboards whose cheesiness is counteracted by haunting, ethereal male-and-female vocals that hang like sorrowful spectres overhead.

Track listing:
1. Einleitung
2. The Serpent's Voice

Abstract, psychedelic neofolk from two masters of said musical realm. A capacious sound-world of thick drones, echoing strings, warm acoustic guitars, tape loops, and grim spoken word.

Finnish dark ambient. An enveloping synth-world of drawn-out chords and simple, slo-mo melodies. Two EPs, both for free/name your price via bandcamp. [Apparently this link no longer works, DL link updated below.]

Kalmankantaja also make for a kickass black metal band -- I highly recommend their newest full-length, Tyhjyys.

Infamous - Of Solitude and Silence (2011)

Italian black metal. Somehow, Infamous manages to sneak a bunch of major-key chord progressions into their songs without ever disrupting the melancholic haze. Maybe it's because everything is absolutely drenched in reverb.

Track listing:
1. Of Solitude and Silence
2. Rex Verminorum
3. Grey Euphoria
4. Human Scum
5. Spiritual Desolation
6. Lugore

Life's erosion

Eroc - Eroc 3 (1979)

Instrumental krautrock splendour from Joachim Heinz Ehrig, one-time drummer of symphonic prog greats Grobschnitt. Following an intro track that's as conspicuous and confounding as that album cover, the record quickly segues into a dream-like state of psychedelic, woozily beautiful krautrock, and stays there for most of the album's duration.

Track listing:
1. Wutpickel
2. Tontillon
3. Fito Linte
4. Wolkenreise
5. Solar Plexus
6. Euer Lied
7. Falke Whips It Out
8. About My Town
