Alice Coltrane - Huntington Ashram Monastery (1969)

Previously on OPIUM HUM:
Alice Coltrane & Carlos Santana - Illuminations (1974)

Dreamy, psychedelic fusion from the great Alice Coltrane. Recently, I've heard way too many so-called friends (two, to be precise) say that they never could get into her music. Yeah, the glimmering sounds of a harp being played by a literal master over a slow-burning, in-the-pocket rhythm section -- who would ever wanna listen to that? We should be thanking our lucky stars that we got to share a world with her. I WILL FIGHT YOU.

Track listing:
1. Huntington Ashram Monastery
2. Turiya
3. Paramahansa Lake
4. Via Sivanandagar
5. Ihs
6. Jaya Jaya Rama

  1. I just bought The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane!! It’s her temple’s Krishna chants from a temple she had in the 80’s,90’s!!!

  2. Have you heard any of her later devotional, stuff? In particular, Divine Songs springs to mind. Absolutely zero harp content, it is like being immersed in a pool of slow motion spiritual ecstasy. But I'm sure a man of your prodigious musical appetites must know all about it. The people who have heard Alice Coltrane and can't get into Alice Coltrane are soulless automatons.

    1. I've actually never heard Divine Songs, but having looked it up a bit, I'm totally fucking stoked to listen to it. Thanks so much for the recommendation!

  3. As Fate would have it, I was listening to this very album earlier today. Anyone who can't get into this doesn't get a lot of things. Pity. Their loss.
