The final installment of a trilogy of albums that found John Zorn at his most accessible by a very wide margin. (Actually, this man has about 4 thousand albums, of which I've heard maybe 20-25, so for all I know, he might have an album of vocal jazz standards sung by Norah Jones.) Ethereal but propulsive jazz fusion powered by a glimmering cloud of vibraphone, harp, piano, guitar, and more. Borders on easy listening at times. If, when you think John Zorn, you think chaotic jazz-grind or discordant avant-garde, this record might blow your mind a bit.

I'm in a celebrating mood, so here's a personal favorite: the first Fantômas album. God-tier, horror-themed, experimental grind/thrash/sludge/jazz-noir/spazz-core from the folks who brought you, among many others, Mr. Bungle, Slayer, and Melvins. Obviously, this is, by this blog's standards, fairly well-known, but 1) Tomahawk finally put out a new album and it's got me on a Mike Patton kick, 2) Who says everything I post on here has to be obscure? and 3) I guarantee you there are people reading this who have never heard Fantômas and are about to have their minds blown out their asses.

Cacophonous, free improvisation-heavy fusion courtesy of a phenomenally talented four-piece that includes Trevor Dunn (of Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Secret Chiefs 3, Tomahawk, etc.) From the jump, Black Aces explodes with a jarring intensity that, somehow, the band manages to maintain for the entirety of the album's hour and five minute runtime.

MadLove - White with Foam (2009)

MadLove are by far the most accessible of Trevor Dunn's numerous bands (Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, and Tomahawk, to name a few.) White with Foam, the band's only record to date, consists of haunted, guitar-driven alt rock that's somewhat akin to Sadness Is a Butterfly-era Blonde Redhead, but more jagged, and with just a touch of the twisted lounge music that Mr. Bungle did oh-so well. Takes a while to sink in, but once it does, well... um, you, pretty much, you know... like it. Like, a lot.
