Aeternus - Beyond the Wandering Moon (1997)

One of the most perfect debuts in black metal history, Beyond the Wandering Moon deserves every bit of praise that it gets. It's perfectly raging and epic, with some folk-inspired melodies, tasteful keyboards, acoustic guitars, and deep, growling vocals that, along with the beefy production and tight, busy drumming, give the whole thing a death metal-y feel. I usually avoid posting albums that are as well-known as this one, but now that I'm a highly respected and influential blogger, I have a responsibility to raise awareness of second-tier classics such as this, in the hopes that one day, burgeoning black metal fans will listen to them alongside albums like Filosofem and Pure Holocaust. I do it for the children.

Track listing:
1. Under the Blade of the Dead
2. Sworn Revenge
3. White Realm
4. Sentinels of Darkness
5. Embraced
6. Vind
7. Waiting for the Storms
8. Winter Tale
9. To Enter the Realm of Legend
10. Celtic Harp Solo (The Last Feast)

When the wind scars the bleached faces, of the snowy land
cold scent of the wind, brings the truth from behind different sides

Visage - Visage (1980)

One of the better new wave records you'll come across. Precise rhythms, soaring synth melodies, robotic vocals. Will remind you that new wave rose directly from Low.

Track listing:
1. Visage
2. Blocks on Blocks
3. The Dancer
4. Tar
5. Fade to Grey
6. Malpaso Man
7. Mind of a Toy
8. Moon Over Moscow
9. Visa-Age
10. The Steps

Addiction, addiction, addiction, addiction

Gorath - Apokálypsis (Unveiling the Age That Is Not to Come) (2011)

Progressive Belgian black metal. Given how much people seem to like black metal with elements of psychedelia and post-metal, it's truly bizarre how little attention this band and album have gotten.

Track listing:
1. Before the Throne of the Demiurge
2. The Seven Seals
3. Wrath of God
4. Le Porteur de Lumière
5. Beasts from the Earth and Sea
6. Whore of Babylon
7. Millennium (Thousand Years of Darkness)

You consciously dream, bathing in sweat
Yet closer to reality you have ever been
Revealing the destiny of this flawed world
To be destroyed by its own malevolent creator

Bill Connors - Swimming with a Hole in My Body (1979)

Enchanting, nocturnal compositions for acoustic guitar. On a personal note: The events in Baltimore have been wrenching to me in a way that I wouldn't have expected. Then there's the earthquake in Nepal. And I woke up today (which will be yesterday when this gets posted) to the news that this nice lunch lady that smoked cigarettes across the street from my house and gave my cat treats was murdered by her husband. The world can seem so sad sometimes. So I'm in need of some musical comfort food.

Track listing:
1. Feet First
2. Wade
3. Sing and Swim
4. Frog Stroke
5. Surrender to the Water
6. Survive
7. With Strings Attached
8. Breath

Cerebral Incubation - Gonorrhea Nodule Mastication (2012)

Remember when I posted Extermination Dismemberment a few weeks back, describing it as "some of the most ignorant shit I've posted here"? Well, this is way more ignorant. And, given that that's the only standard by which slamming death metal should be judged, it's also way better. It's downright absurd how utterly artless this shit is. The gutturals all blend into one long wall of pig snort under a random assortment of chug-a-lug riffs, slow blasts, and random pinch harmonics. Not to mention having some of the best/worst/stupidest samples I've ever heard, and a mid-album skit for the ages.

Track listing:
1. Ankyloblepharon Filiforme Aconitum
2. Gonorrhea Nodule Mastication
3. Bubbling Rectal Cum Fart
4. Rectovaginal Fistula
5. Alcoholic Encephalopathy
6. A Gentleman's Intermission

3. The First Episode
4. Armed Robbery
5. Pimps
6. Comin' Out Hard
7. Mr. Big
8. Niggas Like Us

Grand Nocturne - Despair and Demise (2006)

Here's some repetitive, mournful black metal from Finland. High-pitched howls, slow to mid-paced tempos, and ritualistic self-destruction. The Burzum school of black metal.

Track listing:
1. The Grand Harvest
2. Despair and Demise
3. Misanthropy
4. Departure

Destruction awaits

Ø - Tulkinta (1997)

Abstract, minimal techno from one half of Pan Sonic. Simple, pulsing beats and uneasy, droning, glitchy tones.

2. Atomit
3. Radium
4. Kohta
5. Sähkörausku

Visthia - Reditus Conscientia (2006)

Related:
Arcana Coelestia - Le Mirage de l'Idéal (2009)

Italian black metal. Reditus Conscientia is Visthia's first proper LP, and like so much BM that I post here, it distinguishes itself without doing anything terribly innovative. Way more kickass than that album cover suggests.

Track listing:
1. Vultus Noster
2. Summa Alba Potentia
3. Lupi Tui Non Dormiunt
4. Reditus Conscientia
5. Via Spinarum
6. Via Spinarum: Sanguis Terram Nutrit

Sky turns black

John McLaughlin - Devotion (1970)

Heavy, instrumental psych/jazz rock from the great John McLaughlin (Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Tony Williams Lifetime.) Fuzzed-out leads wailing over knotty, dissonant grooves.

Track listing:
1. Devotion
2. Dragon Song
3. Marbles
4. Siren
5. Don't Let the Dragon Eat Your Mother
6. Purpose of When

Meeting of the spirits

Order of Orias - Inverse (2011)

Stellar modern black metal from Australia. Highly dynamic, with some notable instances of chiming clean guitars over heavy sections, which I'm a total sucker for. Also, there's something appealingly simplistic about the guitar work. The 'riffs' rarely move very fast, and often consist of patiently shifting, droning minor chords, making the occasional shredding guitar lead really hit home.

Track listing:
1. Presence
2. Irreverence
3. Offering
4. Ash and Sparks
5. Concealer
6. Bleak One
7. Void

I shall be a temple of serpents

Ben Reynolds - Earth and Space Magics (2005)

Welp, I just narrowly avoided losing my entire digital music library, including literally every solo recording I have ever made, which would have legit broken my heart. Not to mention the fact that this blog would have been more or less kaput. Goddamn I am relieved. My children, learn from my mistakes: back up your shit.

So to celebrate, here's one of the albums that I was thinking would be impossible to track down again. A New Zealander, Ben Reynolds makes evocative, deeply meditative psychedelia that blurs the boundaries of psych folk and organic drone. This is the only full album of his that I've found, and any help finding more would be greatly appreciated.

Track listing:
1. Sunward Mooned the Moon
2. Original Emptiness
3. This England
4. A Pit Meditation
5. Howlers

Dwellers forever

Blood of Kingu - Dark Star on the Right Horn of the Crescent Moon (2014)

Related:
Rattenfänger - Epistolae Obscurorum Virorum (2012)

Blood of Kingu is in effect a continuation of Hate Forest, who, in addition to alienating lots of people by saying some racist shit, produced some of the greatest black metal ever made. Three albums in, they have made a record that can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with HF's best. Dark Star... is dense, cacophonous, and war-like, featuring the same distinctive, sickly tremolo-picked riffing, hyper speed blasts, and monstrous vocals that defined HF's sound, but fuller, and more layered.

Track listing:
1. Crowned Scarlet Moon Is Waiting for Eclipse
2. He Who Is Not to Be Named
3. Mother Hydra
4. Enshrined in the Nethermost Lairs Beneath the Oceans
5. Red Star on the Path of Ea
6. Sigil of the Watcher
7. Prayer to the Gods of Night
8. The Bringer of Pestilence
9. The Cycle Returneth

Gateways to outer void

The Silent Numbers - Calculator (2011)

Anxious, atmospheric post-punk with shoegaze-y tendencies from gentrification hub Portland, OR. This 4-song EP deals largely in tense verses that explode into cathartic, layered anti-hooks, and they've made it available for name your price download via their bandcamp, so they are nice.

Track listing:
1. Calculator Watch
2. Canadia
3. Foundation
4. Ruthless

Love is not enough

Ambulance - The End of Our Time (2004)

Swedish melodic d-beat. Ambulance's only LP, The End of Our Time is def one of the best melodic d-beat (aka Tragedycore) records. Rages hard, and the production's full and a lil raw. Right up there with Jeniger, Tragedy, and Lycanthro Punk.

Track listing:
1. Habits
2. All Lies
3. Bringing Out the Dead
4. Out of Reach
5. Scarred for Life
6. No More
7. Hands Out of the Pocket
8. Consequence of Self-Behaviour

Earth Opera - The Great American Eagle Tragedy (1969)

Related:
Muleskinner - Muleskinner (1972)

It's getting pretty warm here in Portland, OR, so I'm in the mood for some breezy, folk- and blues-tinged psych rock. Not to take away from this band's achievements, but this record sounds pretty much exactly like the Grateful Dead (I hope that I don't have to be the one to tell you that the Dead are actually a great band that merely attracted an obnoxious fan base), so if on Aoxomoxoa isn't enough for you, you're gonna like this.

Track listing:
1. Home to You
2. Mad Lydia's Waltz
3. Alfie Finney
4. Sanctuary from the Law
5. All Winter Long
6. The American Eagle Tragedy
7. Roast Beef Love
8. It's Love
9. After You [bonus]

Lord Belial - Unholy Crusade (1999)

Raging, battle-ready Swedish black metal with an epic, generally melodic approach. A lot like early Marduk, but a bit more musically adventurous -- for example, check out the cello on "War of Hate", or the acoustic guitars and clean vocals on "Divide Et Impera". Put this on the next time you're storming the gates of heaven.

Track listing:
1. Summon the Legions
2. Unholy Crusade
3. War of Hate
4. Lord of Evil Spirits
5. Death Is the Gate
6. Bleed on the Cross
7. Divide Et Impera
8. Master of Destruction
9. Night Divine
10. And Heaven Eternally Burns (Realm of a Thousand Burning Souls Part II)

I can see the holy angel falling to its knees
Tearing off their own wings to bleed eternally

Setherial - Nord... (1996)

Setherial is a longstanding Swedish group, and Nord..., their debut LP, is a piece of true black metal art that's easily my favorite of their many albums. Raging, passionate, epic, evil -- all of that, 100% of the time. Should be considered mandatory listening for any fan of black metal, especially of the In the Nightside Eclipse variety.

Track listing:
1. In the Still of Northern Fullmoon
2. Mörkrets tid
3. Över det blodtäckta nord
4. I nattens famn
5. För dem mitt blod
6. I skuggors dunkla sken

Surrounded by a pale and cold radiance
Eye so morbid and brilliant

Majesty Crush - Love 15 (1993)

Majesty Crush was a little-known Detroit shoegaze band who recorded just one full-length. Somehow, despite the internet music nerd community's love for 90s shoegaze, Love 15 has managed to stay almost completely under the radar. Even though it's practically perfect.

Maybe it's because their take on love, shoegaze's favorite topic, is significantly darker than that of most of their peers; album opener "Boyfriend" is a twisted love song in which the narrator fantasizes about gutting his love interest's boyfriend like a fish, "Uma" and "No. 1 Fan" are both stalker anthems, and elsewhere, there's talk of alcoholism, drugs, prostitution, and suicide. However, it's all presented in a glimmering, upbeat, Catherine Wheel-ish package.

Track listing:
1. Boyfriend
2. Uma
3. No. 1 Fan
4. Brand
5. Purr
6. Seles
7. Grow
8. Pretty Head
9. Cicciolina
10. Penny for Love
11. Skin
12. Feigned Sleep
13. Horse

Mysticum - In the Streams of Inferno (1996)

Norwegian industrial black metal. Don't be fooled by the "industrial" part, though, as what you really have here is dark, warlike black metal with keyboards and a conspicuous drum machine (no EQ sweeps, digital vocal trickery, dance beats, etc.) Off the top of my head, I can't think of a better record in its subgenre.

Track listing:
1. Industries of Inferno
2. The Rest
3. Let the Kingdom Come
4. Wintermass
5. Where the Raven Flies
6. Crypt of Fear
7. In Your Grave
8. In the Last of the Ruins We Search for a New Planet

What's that glittering in the sky?

Fuzzy, lo-fi indie/psych rock. It's a great record all the way through -- part easy, low-key indie rock, part far-out space rock -- with some amazing moments of stoned inspiration, like the blastbeat on obvious mixtape cut "Dusty Rue". Members of Duster.

Track listing:
1. Song of the Ancient
2. Now and Formerly
3. Dusty Rue
4. Beezlebub
5. Gladness (Is in the Heart)

Elysian Blaze - Blood Geometry (2012)

Two discs, eight songs, and over two hours of epic, ghostly, funeral doom-infused black metal. For the uninitiated: Elysian Blaze is a one-man band from Australia who, for many, has pretty much set the standard for the subgenre, and Blood Geometry is, thus far, the project's crowning achievement. It's majestic, sorrowful, and deeply hypnotic without relying too much on repetition, and boasts a more dramatic, even ceremonial, less overtly depressive feel than past works. The sound is densely layered, and every musical element (guitar, drums, piano, multiple keyboards, vocals) is completely drenched in reverb, giving the songs a haunting, far-away quality, as though they're being channeled into our realm from the spirit world. Overall, this record is a straight-up masterpiece -- one of the greatest metal records of the decade so far -- and anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong.

Track listing:
-Disc One-
1. A Choir for Venus
2. The Temple Is Falling
3. Sigils that Beckon Death
4. Blood Geometry
-Disc Two-
1. A Blade for Twilight
2. Pyramid of the Cold Son
3. Blood of Ancients, Blood of Hatred
4. Void Alchemy

Richard Wahnfried - Time Actor (1979)

Previously on OPIUM HUM:
Klaus Schulze - Shadowlands (2013)

Richard Wahnfried is a pseudonym for the great Klaus Schulze. He doesn't, at least on Time Actor, use this alter-ego to reach beyond his usual pulsing synth-worlds, but merely allows for some heavily effected, half-sung, possibly improvised ramblings over top of them. This can make for a truly bizarre listening experience. For true nerds only.

Track listing:
1. Time Actor
2. Time Factory
3. Charming the Wind
4. Grandma's Clockwork
5. Distorted Emission
6. The Silent Sound of the Ground
7. Time Echoes
8. Agamemory [bonus]

Lux Occulta - Forever Alone, Immortal (1996)

Epic Polish black metal. Melodic riffs, keyboards, and what sounds like some real cello and flute give Forever Alone, Immortal a symphonic feel, while extended slow/midtempo sections keep things suitably dark and atmospheric.

Track listing:
1. The Kingdom Is Mine (I Saw the Beginning)
2. Homodeus (Throne of Fire)
3. Sweetest Stench of the Dead (The Battlefield)
4. The Third Eye (Illuminatio)
5. Apokathastasis (Out of Chaos)
6. Bitter Taste of Victory
7. Burn [bonus]

Luscious Jackson - In Search of Manny (1992)

If you remember Luscious Jackson at all, you're probably my age or a little older, and your memory of them goes something like, "Didn't they have some hit?" (Answer: Kind of.) However, if you're cool, you might remember them for In Search of Manny, their amateurish debut EP, released on Grand Royal. The alt rock meets hip hop vibe is 90s as fuck, as is the semi-coherent, very white rapping, but somewhere between sampling Honey Bane and the echoing, heavy-lidded vocals of Jill Cunniff, you realize that they were just punk kids having fun mixing mid-paced breakbeats with guitars in a (likely smoke-filled) studio, and it's infectious.

Track listing:
1. Let Yourself Get Down
2. Life of Leisure
3. Daughters of the Kaos
4. Keep on Rockin' It
5. She Be Wantin' It More
6. Bam Bam
7. Satellite

Tyrant - Too Late to Pray (1987)

Stellar US heavy metal. The songs on Too Late to Pray are dark, heavy, cacophonous, a bit sludge-y at times, and permeated by a thick, evil atmosphere. Though Tyrant flirted with Christianity in their lyrics ("Fight for the Nazarene/Fight for your soul"), they've helped me to fall in love with Satan's favorite subgenre all over again.

Track listing:
1. Tyrant's Revelation II
2. Too Late to Pray
3. Beyond the Grave
4. Valley of Death
5. The Nazarene
6. Bells of Hades
7. Into the Flames
8. Babylon

Previously on OPIUM HUM:
Niteflyte - Niteflyte (1979)

By request (sort of), here's Niteflyte's second and final album. Smooth, pop-oriented funk/soul filtered through a cocaine-coated sheen of disco. To me, it doesn't quite match the triumph that was their first record, but there's plenty to like here, such as the plastic reggae of "Shoot from the Hip" and the breezy groove of "On Your Own".

Track listing:
1. You Are
2. You're Breaking My Heart
3. Shoot from the Hip
4. Anyway You Want
5. Sexy Dancer

Darkestrah - Манас (2013)

Masterful, epic pagan black metal from this long-running, Germany-based band. IMO Манас is their strongest work; it's idiosyncratic, but grand and sorrowful, with a warm, lush sound, and a river of fiery anger running through its core. The folk elements, which include throat singing and temir komuz, are used tastefully and to great effect, and their songwriting has never been more cohesive. And of course, their vocalist (who I just found out is, after 15 years, no longer in the band, boooo) puts in a chill-inducing performance, alternating between a fierce, gravelly scream and expressive, layered singing. If you have the attention span for it, Манас is one of the more rewarding black metal records in recent memory.

Track listing:
1. Манас-Мститель
2. Память
3. Победа
4. Кыргызстан
5. Манас-Батыр

Here the silence is empty. It is no longer there.

Coaltar of the Deepers - Yukari Telepath (2007)

Dreamy, pop-y shoegaze/alt rock with a weakness for crystalline, arpeggiating dance keyboards, gauzy guitar textures, and brief glimpses of "death metal." Though they give the band personality, I've always found their metal parts a bit weak, so I was pleased to hear that they'd toned down that aspect of their sound on Yukari Telepath. In fact, it's probably their most sonically cohesive record to date. It's still utterly unique (and utterly Japanese) music, with a number of chill-inducing, mind-melting moments, just with less zaniness.

Track listing:
1. Introduction of Zoei
2. Zoei
3. Wipeout (Retake)
4. Water Bird

Empty - The Last Breath of My Mortal Despair (2005)

Dense, cacophonous depressive black metal from Spain. The Last Breath of My Mortal Despair is a diverse record with plenty of peaks and valleys, and a psychotic vocal performance that encompasses ghoulish rasps, deep growls, hoarse shouts, wolven howls, ethereal chants, shivering moans, and whispers. However, in addition to everything that they do right, they do make one major Metal Boner™* in the form of a Seinfeld-style slap bass break right around the 2-minute mark in "Manifest of Endless Sorry in Sanity". Oopsy-daisy. Other than that, this is a severely underrated record. For fans of the more disturbing side of black metal -- Bethlehem, Silencer, (the Swedish) Shining, and the like.

*For more examples of this phenomenon, see the "boioioioioing" breakdown in Taake's "Over Bjoergvin Graater Himmerik III", the vocal break in Agalloch's "She Painted Fire Across the Skyline Part 3", and of course, the bleating saxophone solo on Nachtmytium's "Seasick, Part 2: Oceanborne". Come to think of it, that entire song probably qualifies.

Track listing:
1. The Horrible Drawing Back of the Veil
2. A Source of Hollow Essence
3. The Spectral Paleness of the Skin
4. The Last Breath of My Mortal Despair
5. Mortuary Tune of the Prisoner's Anguish
6. Manifest of Endless Sorrow in Sanity
7. Owner of Wailings

Prosper - Broken Door (1975)

Trippy, jazz-tinged German prog. Broken Door, Prosper's only proper LP, jumps from dissonant, angular instrumental workouts to sunny acoustic numbers to cryptic, keyboard-fueled psychedelia, with enviable musical chops to back it all up.

Track listing:
1. Beginning
2. Burning in the Sun
3. Broken Door
4. Dance of an Angel
5. Your Country
6. Birds of Passage
7. Master's Inspiration

Gilberto Gil - Gilberto Gil (1968)

A colorful fusion of bossa nova (and probably some other Brazilian styles of music with which I'm not as familiar) and psychedelic rock, with orchestral arrangements courtesy of Rogério Duprat. Think Os Mutantes. In fact, really, think Os Mutantes: they're Gil's backing band. If I knew what was good for me, I'd probably listen to this every morning, and be a happier, more successful person within a few weeks.

Track listing:
1. Frevo Rasgado
2. Coragem pra Suportar
3. Domingou
4. Marginália Il
5. Pega a Voga, Cabuelo
6. Êle Falava Nisso Todo Dia
