Gaussian Curve - The Distance (2017)

One of the great modern ambient records. Simple, programmed beats coast through a shimmering expanse of rich, chiming guitars and synths. At times, there's a slo-mo smoothness that suggests 80s soft rock played at 33 instead of 45; elsewhere, it's more of a tasteful take on classic new age. Speaking of classic new age, some of you nerds might be interested to learn that Gigi Masin is involved.

Track listing:
1. Breathe
2. The Distance
3. Dancing Rain
4. Suspended Motion
5. Ceremony
6. T.O.R.
7. Four for You
8. Another Place

    1. To me, new age is a style of ambient music. So all new age is ambient, but not all ambient is new age.

  4. Haven't been able to stop listening to this all weekend, thank you so much. It's pure bliss on headphones. Would love to know of more that is similar to this.

I attended an ayahuasca ceremony in November; one of the most terrifying and heart-achingly beautiful weekends of my entire life, and listening to this last night unearthed some visuals and experiences that I hadn't thought of since. Not sure why, but I'm fascinated and very grateful.

  5. Absolutely love this record. Their debut - Clouds - is also phenomenal. Two major records for me the last two years.

What would you recommend to somebody that loves this? Besides Walls and Burmer above.

    1. You know, I've thought about it, and haven't really come up with anything. There's nothing I can really think of that sounds like this. Good thing I waited a few days for this excellent response, huh?

  7. I'd heard of this, and their first one 'Clouds'. But not listened until now. Utterly sublime. Thank you, Dear Spirit.

  8. OK this is an absolute MF'ing masterpiece!! I've been listening to it a lot the last few days & that it can get me out of my toxic funk as well as quiet my shit mind (even when benzos fail) is extraordinary. I couldn't remember where I got this; I checked 2 other blogs first that somehow I felt would be more likely & then I came back here to my fav blog...I should've thanked you the moment I d/l'ed it. **I have to say many of the beautiful textures & guitar-like washes remind me A LOT of the early solo work especially by the great Warren Defever, founder/genius as you know I'm sure of His Name Is Alive - one of my fav bands of all time. This album has echoes of HNIA as well; I'm sure that's why it hit me so hard. So for the dude above who asked for similar material, Warren's (recently released) recordings, from his teenage & tween years known as the "Home Recordings 1979 - 1990" as well as "Hope is a Candle" which just dropped 2 days ago - is a glorious place to start. -Cheers
