Michael Garrison - Eclipse (1982)

Excellent third LP from outer space-obsessed Oregonian Michael Garrison. Propulsive, synth-based compositions occasionally filled out by ethereal vocals and some surprisingly heavy guitars. 10/10 would listen to on headphones while exploring the outer limits of our universe.

Oath - Light of the Black Dawn (2013) + Antichrist Reign (2014)

Related:
Grimirg - MMXV-I (2015)

Two EPs from this phenomenal, supremely underrated Finnish black metal duo. Oath specialize in foregrounding the sorrowful beauty that's at the heart of black metal, while keeping it 100% evil and steering far clear of conspicuously pretty, "post-" territory. Both EPS are free/name your price via bandcamp, and while you're there, do yourself a favor and pick up their new album, Mustan Liekin Veljeskunta, cause as far as I'm concerned it's a fucking masterpiece.

Track listing:
-Light of the Black Dawn-
1. Oath
2. Light of the Black Dawn
3. Call of the Five-Pointed Star
4. Naar Natten Endelig er Her
-Antichrist Reign-
1. Murder of the Innocent

Canadian black/death metal annihilation. Heavy-ass production, killer riffs, and bestial vocals by a dude calling himself "Black Plague of War and Disease." Paul Schütze - Deus Ex Machina (1989)

Masterful debut full-length from Australian composer Paul Schütze. Dark, drifting synths enveloping abstract jazz fusion and clattering percussion, with fragmented voices periodically flashing into earshot. The kind of stuff that sounds best when it's late and you're really, really... sleepy.

Steven Halpern - Spectrum Suite (1976)

Soothing, minimal keyboard pieces by new age guru Steven Halpern. Halpern's the kind of guy whose LP sleeves read like a resume, so that you know that he's qualified to make chill-ass new age music. Like, it's not just some schlub off of the street that's plinking around on those keys -- this man's a professional!

Many, many different versions of this album have been released, all with slightly different track listings, so in case you're wondering, this is the 1988 CD version.

Oroku - Living Through the End Time (2006)

Very sad to learn that Oroku's lead vocalist, Jeff, has passed away. Another beautiful, troubled soul whose untimely passing into the great beyond feels all the more heartbreaking for its sad sense of inevitability. I'm not the one to write a worthy eulogy, as we weren't super-tight, but I can say this: he was a funny, kind, much-loved member of my extended band-family, as well as a gifted lyricist and vocalist, and he deserved better.

In Jeff's honor, let's listen to Oroku's only LP, Living Through the End Time. Heavy, sludgy crust with sorrowful undertones highlighted by a full-time cellist -- as you know, cello is the world's saddest-sounding instrument. For the full effect, as you listen, imagine that you're in a sweaty, smelly basement with crusties headbanging all around as you try to squeeze your way to the front, tall can in hand, so that you can actually see the band at the center of it all.

Track listing:
1. Vulture
2. Disgust for Mankind
3. Meaningless
4. Death to the Summer
5. Drow
6. The Falling
7. Spineless
8. Terror
9. The End Is Near
